I was thinking of my father as a youth because I mentioned his emigration flight in a news comment.  So I thought I’d post this as an illustration.  It was taken about three years before he fled Germany.  He’s the fourth boy from the right in the row sitting on chairs.

I wonder if there might be a helpful analogy between illegal immigration and common-law marriage that might give us a framework with historical underpinnings to help resolve the position of illegal immigrants in the United States.
