It really does float

October 19, 2012

There’s a pond in the middle of town called Spy Pond.

In it is an island.

I had read before that it’s a floating island, but it always seemed generally in the same area, in the middle of the pond, so I thought, “That must be some sort of technical distinction, but it must not actually mean much in practice.”

Today I happened to be nearby and walking home, so I walked down to the pond, and the island was all the way across the pond —  it looked as if it was jammed up against another shore.  The pond gave a very different impression with this arrangement.

The island really does float.
